St John's Hospital • Dunwich






It was founded during the reign of Richard I and was primarily concerned with caring for lepers. That said, if the local poor didn't mind the risk of contagion, they come come here for treatment too.

As with many leper hospitals, it was sited away from the main town. In this case it has meant its survival, as is well inland and was not lost to the sea with the rest of the town. 


The last leper treated here was in the mid 16th century, and the poor continued to be welcomed here until it closed in the 19th.
